How is earth resistance actually measured?

We use the fall-of-potential (Wenner four-point) method or a calibrated clamp-on tester, depending on site access. The reading is taken after installation and logged against the design target, then re-checked yearly under AMC.

A GI pipe electrode depends on the soil staying moist to hold its resistance, so it drifts upward in dry months and corrodes over time. Chemical earthing uses a copper-bonded electrode with a conductive backfill compound that holds moisture around it, keeping resistance stable across seasons with less maintenance.

Load tells us the resistance target, not what the ground can deliver. Two sites with identical panels can need very different electrode counts depending on soil type and moisture at depth, so we always survey before sizing rather than quoting off a standard package.

They can share the same physical pit but should be designed separately. Lightning strike current is much higher and much faster than a fault current, so the down-conductor and its dedicated earth pit are sized to IS/IEC 62305, not the general electrical earthing standard.

A standard residential or commercial chemical earthing pit is usually excavated, installed and tested within a day. Larger jobs — substation grids or multi-pit industrial systems — depend on the design and typically run 3 to 7 days including testing.

Yes. Every installation is tested after commissioning and issued a resistance test certificate referencing IS 3043, which you can file for statutory inspection, insurance, or client audit requirements.

Yes — backfill can dry out, joints can corrode, and construction work nearby can disturb the pit. Resistance doesn’t announce itself failing, which is why we recommend an annual re-test under AMC rather than assuming a passed test stays valid indefinitely.
